As many of you know, I'm an aspiring photographer. I've been pretty happy with my Canon Powershot S3 IS. It's basically a hybrid camera that allows automatic and manual settings and has a 12x zoom capability. It has served me very well over the last few years. I wanted to upgrade to a digital SLR before moving to Belgium so I could focus on learning more about photography, but we just couldn't afford it. It was a choice between that or a laptop and as a writer I couldn't go without a computer.
I just had to vent because lately I've been annoyed at the fact that everywhere around me there are tourists with SLRs and they don't even seem to know how to use them! Really, it's ridiculous. Despite their bulkiness and high price tag, everyone and their mother seems to have one. That is, except me!
I think I'll start to look at used SLR when I get back to the states. It would just bring my photography up another notch, and I'm ready for that. Keep me posted if you hear of any good deals!

Mee too — we can be envious together :D But I think that you take great photos. I for one don't know photography, but I'm sure i'll at least read the manual when I do get an SLR (I love my current camera, but it has limitation simply because the lens is small). But now that I've gotten a nice compact camera, my expectation for SLR has gone up and I probably won't want the cheapest one on the market. ...So I'm waiting for the right time, I hope yours find way to you soon!
Thanks Kyoko! Like I said before, the details in your photos made me think you already had an SLR.
I agree that holding off could be beneficial. Troy sent me this link recently about a new kind of hybrid.

check out the wikipedia entry on 4:3 systems: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Thirds_system . i read about these a bit in doing my pre-dslr research. it sounds interesting, although it also seems like olympus is the only company manufacturing them right now. i think the biggest drawback is that if you end up collecting lenses for a 4:3 system, they won't be compatible with larger dslr mounts if you eventually move up from that.
